Karakum
Desert
The Karakum or 'Black' Desert occupies an area of about
35 million ha, or more than 80% of the whole territory
of Turkmenistan. According to its geological and natural
conditions, the Karakum can be divided into three large
parts: Northern or Zaunguz, Central or Lowland, and South-Eastern
Karakum.
Unlike the Sahara the Karakum is largely covered bushes.
A few Oasises are spread across the desert where the visitor
can encounter a very traditional and hospitable (Turkmen)
society. Travel into this very serious desert is only
possible by 4WD and well-prepared water and food supplies.
