Eco & Trekking
Central Asias Mountains and Deserts have some of the most
spectacular landscape and wildlife in the world. There
are tremendous trekking opportunities throughout the lower
ranges of the Tien Shan and the Pamir-Alay mountain ranges
and in the Issyk Kul area, excellent off-road driving
in the Karakum
and Kyzyllkum deserts and breathtaking horse-back
riding in the Kopetdag and the Tien Shan. Furthermore
- desolate cycling routes through Kygyzstan's fascinating
West, Camel Tours around lake Aidarkul and bird- and wild-life
watching in Central Asia's numerous Nature Reserves and
National Parks.
Although relatively well-developed during Soviet times
when Central Asia was one of the favourite travel destinations
for Eastern Europeans and climbers and hikers from all
over the former Soviet Union, unfortunately little remains
of the infrastructure. Travel into the more exotic destinations
should be well planned and much is simply impossible without
the support of a local agency.
Wildlife protection and Reserves have also seen better
days - a lot of the schemes and highly ambitious projects
from Soviet times have fallen victim to economical and
political problems of the various countries. Nevertheless
- the cautious traveller will encounter quite a few attempts
to put things back into order which deserve support.
